From 2006 to 2010 L.A. All Day was in the business of promoting the sport of Rollerblading. Tracy White and myself (Carlos Kessell) started a contest series that was created for the youth of Rollerblading. Our goal was to give the kids an outlet to grow in the sport and give them an arena to display their skills. Here are some of the photos and edits we put out from 2006 to 2010. Lets take a walk down memory lane.

Lets start with the first ever edit of L.A. All Day by Daniel Scarano on April 28th 2007. This was the old set up at the Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club.

L.A. All Day edit by Daniel Scarano on June 9th 2007. This was the first comp with the new down ledge on the launch ramp. Check out the last trick by Nick Galvin... solid.

On July 14th 2007 the first L.A. All Day street comp went down in Santa Monica & Venice Ca. The elite winners were David Jones & Russell Day with a tie because they were the only 2 skaters to hit the last spot, maybe it was too crazy.

The 2007 finals went off the wall. You can see the progression of the park with the first piece of the massive corner bowl. The bowl was ready for the start of the 2008 season. Congrats to David Jones for taking the gold in 2007 and hammering the backflip to soul... insane.

Rat-Tail & L.A. All Day BBQ Day took place March 8, 2008. We had a newly renovated skatepark, free food & the Rat-Tail crew. Skaters like Brian Shima, Alex Broskow, Chris Haffey & Chris Farmer came out and skated the park. Also Jeff Stockwell was finding lines that I haven't seen before. Local heads from the L.A. area came out to represent. All in all it was a good day, and a good day for rollerblading.

Saturday, May 17th 2008 we had our Real Street competition, which was a Roll Series sectional event. Our first stop was right on the beach in Santa Monica. It was a perfect day for skating, we had music, view of the ocean and we had a rail & kicker set up right in front of the L.A. All Day booth. We started the Advanced & Elite divisions at the tennis court rails and then took it to the Park Rails, guys started to warm-up when the police showed up and we had to move it to the Main Street Rail. Thats where Steve Bundy took over and grabbed the gold for the Elite Division.

Edit of the June 21st 2008 comp by Daniel Scarano & Tanner Madix. The 2008 season went to Steve Bundy who was able to compete in every L.A. All Day that year because of the support of his dad...Mr. Bundy.

The 2010 LA All Day season kicked-off this past Saturday, so ONE made the trip from SD to show support and hang out with the all-ages crowd these awesome grassroots events bring together. L.A. All Day August 7th 2010 once again Sean Cowen & Byron Snatchywaters killed the edit. The 2010 overall champ was Sean Cowen who grew up skating at the SMBGC skatepark.

On September 7, 2010 we were informed that the skatepark will be demolished by Thursday September 9, 2010. Due to the short notice we were not able to line up another location as of yet. We will try to find another location and organize another event in the next two weeks. If we our unable to secure another location we will organize an awards ceremony/blade session for the skaters who came and supported L.A. All Day. Since the demolition of the skatepark L.A. All Day has been without a home. It was a rough ending to an amazing journey. Tracy White since then has moved back to Illinois where he is from, Tracy continues to support the youth of rollerblading and organizes contest for the city of Rockford, Il.(One Interview) As for L.A. All Day, well, we still own the name, so who knows what the future will bring. I hope you enjoyed the walk down memory lane as much as we have. We thank everyone who was involved in making L.A. The Legacy of LA All Day

Here’s a sight you won’t see in Santa Monica anymore.

In the time following the end of NISS and the X-Games, and eventually the ASA comps, the stick-to-your-guns-community otherwise known as the rollerblading industry have clung to and celebrated a number of grassroots contests. IMYTA, BCSD, Winterclash, Superhick, Barn Burner, Hoedown—these are some of the bigger ones, some that have stood the test of time in this volatile industry. There’s the Pan Handle Pow Wow, Last Man Standing, The Windy City Riot, The Chaz Sands Invitational, The Seattle Street Battle. I could go on and on about all of these contests, most of which have become events in themselves, traditions in our humble little underground. Some are held in skateparks with hundreds of people on the course and others take place a little closer to the core of rollerblading, on street spots in cities all over the world. However different each contest is, the one similarity that binds them all together as a staple of blade culture is that each one was created by a small group of passionate people, a devoted corps of individuals hoping to give back to the community that brought them up. From 2005 until September of last year former pros and pioneers of blading, Tracy White and Carlos Kessell, brought that passion to the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Club with the LA All Day contest series.

BLADE LIFE: An Interview with Alex Miranda

AM 4 life… Alex Miranda, lots of people have an opinion on who Alex is. Some think they know him, few actually do. I’ve known him since we were kids, 12 or 13 years old. When he was still rocking a rat-tail under his A’s cap and wearing a Bash Bros. t-shirt. The first thing we had in common was our favorite baseball player, Jose Canseco… this was before steroids were really illegal. We became friends, and began chillin’, playing football, baseball, BMXing, or whatever the flavor of the month was. In ‘93–’94, rollerblading began to consume us. We saw a great opportunity to be original and have our own crew that did something no one else did at that time. Shortly after that, we were known throughout the city as “Bladers.” Alex had a style that stood out from the rest of us. When Alex skates he strives for perfection, just landing isn’t good enough. There’s a sense of unity when Alex locks on a grind; it seems that he attaches himself to it, while making sure his shirt and hat always match. Alex was getting into the OC scene, skating with Randy Spizer, Arlo Eisenberg and the Senate guys. He was eventually placed on the Senate team, putting his name next to skaters like Louie Zamora, Josh Petty, TJ Webber and B Love. What most people don’t know about Alex is his life outside of rollerblading. I’m sure that there are kids out there who can relate to family issues, health problems and trouble with the law. Alex has had a fair share of ups and downs, but through the fog, he has emerged with a new perspective on life. Alex is a person who can make you laugh one minute and maybe get under your skin the next, but one thing that’s consistent with Alex is that he is always himself, whether you like it or not. — Carlos Kessell

Well, what can I say, Its been a fun ride. The last 5 years have been quite a Journey. Ive seen groms grow into amazing skaters like Sean "Schmib" Cowen. Ive seen kids put on there skates for the first time and now there hittin 360's over a man size box. It was a hard hit on these kids when the skatepark was demolished, but I can tell that a good handful of these kids are sticking to Rollerblading. Here is a short edit, nothing fancy just a digital camera and Imovie, but I think it captures what L.A. All Day is all about. I want to say a special thanks to all the moms who rolled through with refreshments, snacks and of course the "Ace of Cakes". Also thanks to Hiedi from SPA who let us use the Park, the rest of you know who you are, thanks for the support.

When the LA All Day 2010 series kicked off on May 1st, photographer and shredder Scott Moffat was in Santa Monica to get down. And get down he did, randomly re-dislocating his shoulder during the first moments of his heat, which was a major bummer. L.A. ALL DAY THIS WEEKEND!

This weekend is the first L.A. All Day contest of 2010. There will be 4 divisions, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced & Elite Divisions. If you never competed before then this is the right contest for you, we really are doing this to get more kids to skate & compete. On the other side we want to showcase some of the best amateurs in the country, these are the guys who are trying to someday become a pro skaters. Everyone must wear a helmet, and under 18 must wear all pads.

Day Schedule;

Warm-ups: 10am-1230noon
Beginners: 1230-1pm
Intermediate: 1-2pm
Advanced: 3-4pm
Elite: 4-5pm
Awards: 5-530pm

the total points for 2010 L.A. All Day elite division will determine who gets WRS 3 star points.

Through out the competition there will be a p-rail session going on, please wear your helmet at all times.

The entry fee will be $20, all competitors will get a custom L.A. All Day sweater. Whether you compete or not, just come through and represent.

Contest will be located at 1238 Lincoln Blvd. Santa Monica, CA.

2010 L.A. All Day Contest Series

This year marks L.A. ALL Day’s 5th anniversary and we are excited for 2010 to be the biggest and best blading year to date for us so far! Our goal is to continue to increase the number of bladers in the sport. Our strategy involves attracting new bladers while offering an exciting opportunity for current participants to test their skills against some of the best bladers in So Cal. The format of our blade series is five contests designed to attract the youth market while offering challenges to the elite bladers. These types of events are critical to the future growth of rollerblading. So come on out and support the L.A. Scene.

This year 48 kids will skate for free thanks to our presenting sponsors; ONE, Valo, USD, Razors, Rollerwarehouse & Nimh. Also L.A. All Day is a 3 star World Rolling Series event, not only one event but for the whole season.

avid Jones, with his bleach blonde hair and blue eyes — a true product of Southern California — is probably a name that you should acquaint yourself with, if you haven’t already. He’s been killing it all over SoCal, Woodward, and on the contest circuit, while doing everything in his power to promote blading. Last month in Detroit, David proved to everyone in attendance that he could hang with the pros; lacing technical tricks in all of his heats at BCSD. Which makes this the perfect time for a quick look into the life of my friend Davey, from LA.

Dozens of car loads of rollerbladers headed up to Woodward West for the first contest of the 2010 Amateur Inline League season. The stage was set, and kids antsy and anxious after a long winter were poised to get their blade on. And blade they did. Rollerbladers came from as far away as Utah, Brazil, and Venezuala, and of course all over California, for the chance to compete in the AIL and skate the highly-regarded Hangar 18 park at Woodward West. This year their were high expectations for the Bittercold Showdown considering this was the second year in the amazing Modern Skatepark. I must say besides freezing my @&! off I thought that this event was big. The Trade show had a great turnout, the course was fresh, different from last year, new obstacles. This year Chris Haffey took the hammer and he deserved it. Also thanks to the city of Madison Hieghts for hosting. Cheap eats at Coney Island Dogs. So overall the Bitttercold was a hit.

Skating and shooting photos with David Jones is always a good time that leaves me juiced about skating. Our afternoon of skating in the L.A. area ended here, in between a parking structure and a business building. We took full advantage of the rail-happy landscaping. Numerous grinds were held through the entire length of this rail with its nine sections. Likewise, David had no problem with this Savannah. My exposure for this shot was 1/13 @ f/5 ISO 320. To expose for the lights on the trees, I dragged the shutter. I had no tripod, so that’s what’s up with the blurry trees. I used two Quantum Flash units to light David, and was shooting on a Nikon D3 with a Sigma 50-500mm lens (thanks Richie!). — Scott Moffat

Aaron Durand's "BESTEST EXCITMENTS AWARD"!

Aaron Durand came through with another heavy metal award, He came up with the "BESTEST EXCITMENTS AWARD" meaning whoever impressed him the most. Once again Rick Rodriguez came through when he busted a truspin alleop tip-top soyale on the deadly arch rail...WOW!

Aaron Durand decided to make this award around 11am, went to his workshop, cut & welded for a couple of hours, came back competed and skated better then he's ever skated in his life, then presented his award. This guy is far from lazy.

Whoa, we’re deep with pics from yesterday’s first-ever SD All Day event. Glad to say it was a solid turnout, too. Not the same big bunch of young rippers that Tracy has bred in Santa Monica, but something different — a new flavor for an All Day event. Blade Life: Interview with Carlos Kessell

In an industry as small as ours, it’s important for everyone to do their part to help us grow not only as an industry, but as a culture. Blading pioneer and LA All Day Contest Series co-founder, Carlos Kessell, is someone who does more than his share, all day, every day! The LA All Day contest series really is an awesome event that not only promotes rollerblading from the grassroots level, it gives skaters of various skill sets a chance to compete and helps them gain some much sought after exposure. Saturday, July 25th, the contest will take a trip from its home at the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Club in Los Angeles to sunny San Diego. In preparation for the first ever SD All Day contest at Chula Vista Skatepark, ONE thought it was a good idea to speak with Carlos to get his thoughts on blading and to learn a little more about SD All Day. So, here’s the first-ever (yeah, really) Carlos Kessell interview. — BK

The new One video is stirring up some excitement, I was fortunate enough to attend a filming session a few months ago, and if you didn't know better you would think they were filming for a major Hollywood production. hundreds of thousands of dollars in production equipment, with an all star cast and Connor O'Brien in the director's chair, I think this movie will take "skate video's" to new heights.
